The MAGA movement likes to talk about "Western Civilization" and "retvrning to tradition", but which parts of tradition or Western culture do they like?
I won't get into their relationship to civic traditions. This policy is about traditional American art.
They love to post sculptures and talk about trad wives, but at the same time they're defunding the high arts and letting Joann's close. This is devastating to our practice of Western-Roman style art AND to our world-famous traditional art forms such as quilts. The MAGA movement isn't promoting either of them.
I follow a range of diplomatic accounts on Twitter from around the world. One of them is the Saudi Ministry Of Culture. Today I saw a post about their Year of Handicrafts, and I think people would love that here. They're promoting their traditional arts and skills, they're getting people involved, and everybody gets to show off what they make.
For a political movement that ostensibly wants to promote not only "traditional marriages" and traditional culture, but also garment manufacturing, it's telling that they select for policies that try to force women out of working instead of giving respect to domestic work or the arts.
I think a national showcase of traditional handicrafts would beautify the country and stimulate the economy. It would preserve traditional skills and it would preserve jobs. It would honor domestic work, American art, and our history without turning our backs on the future.
