I would not pardon family members and personal associates.
I would work with The Innocence Project and prosecutors to get a list of recommendations for pardons and issue them every year.
There are so many innocent people sitting in prison, some of whom even the prosecution says are innocent, just because of bureaucratic obstacles. Private prisons have a perverse incentive to keep people regardless of guilt so sometimes they make efforts to keep people that the state says are innocent. The president can fix that, and I would. In cases like Marcellus Williams's where it's a state crime, and the governor is refusing to listen to the prosecutors in a death penalty case, I would have the governor charged with attempted murder.
I would also work to enact protections to prevent those situations, including to speed up trials, eliminate cash bail, and to get speedy reconsiderations for prisoners when new evidence comes up.
